Central Water Commission is the only agency doing flood forecasting in India. As per CWC’s Flood Forecasting website[i] the Data Flow Map has information about 226 Flood Forecast Sites in the country comprising of 166 Level Forecast Sites and 60 Inflow Forecast Sites. It also monitors 700 other sites, information is made available through List Based Exploration and Hydrograph View, but no flood forecasting is done for these sites.
In order to better understand the CWC’s flood monitoring and forecasting work, in this article, we have given an overview of CWC’s flood forecasting and monitoring sites in West India. It includes state wise list of CWC’s Level Forecasting, Inflow Forecasting and level monitoring sites in 5 States in West India. Similar report has been published for North India[ii] and North East India[iii] and East India[iv] and South India[v]. This is the last part in the series.
RAJASTHAN
In Rajasthan, CWC has 33 sites including of 25 Level Monitoring and 8 Inflow Forecast sites. The state has no Level Forecast site. Out of 25 Level Monitoring site Mount Abu site is not active. Similarly HFL details and date is not given for 8 Level Monitoring sites though the hydrograph for the same sites are active.
The Bigod and Duplicate Old Bigod sites appear same. The hydrograph for Bigod is active and inactive for Duplicate Old Bigod. The HFL level for both sites is same but HFL date is different. Similarly FRL and MWL information is incomplete for four Inflow Forecasting sites. The hydrographs for most Inflow Forecast sites have incomplete information.

Madhya Pradesh
Overall there are 40 sites listed on CWC FF website in Madhya Pradesh comprising of 2 Level Forecasting, 35 Level Monitoring and 3 Inflow Forecasting sites. 3 of Level Monitoring sites namely Rajghat Dam, Nahargarh and Dumri are inactive. In addition to this HFL details and date is not mentioned for 5 sites with active hydrographs. Also, the FRL and MWL detail is not given for Gudha dam Inflow Forecast site. The hydrographs for most Inflow Forecast sites have incomplete information.

GUJARAT
Gujarat has 7 Level Forecast, 19 Level Monitoring and 8 Inflow Forecasting sites. Out 7 Level Forecast sites, the Vapi site is repeated as Vapi Town also. But the HFL date of both sites is different.
Similarly out of 19 Level Monitoring sites HFL details and date information is incomplete for 10 sites. These sites have active hydrographs.
Among Inflow Forecast sites, Dantewada and Madhuban sites are repeated. The Dantewada site is listed twice on different rivers and in different basins. The FRL details is also not matching. The hydrographs for both Dantewada sites is inactive. The Madhuban site has also incomplete MWL detail and inactive hydrograph. The hydrographs for most Inflow Forecast sites have incomplete information.

MAHARASHTRA
There are 67 sites in Maharashtra state including of 8 Level Forecast, 52 Level Monitoring and 7 Inflow Forecasting sites. Hydrographs for 1 Level Forecast and 2 Level Monitoring sites are inactive. The Palkhed Level Monitoring site has also no HFL detail. In addition to this, 9 more Level Forecasting site lacks HFL data though they have active hydrographs.
Bamni Balharsh and Balharsha Level Forecast sites are same. They have similar DL, WL, HFL details but HFL date is different. Hydrograph for Balharsha site is inactive. 4 Inflow Forecast sites also have incomplete FRL, MWL detail. The Warna dam Inflow Forecast site lacks FRL and MWL detail but the hydrograph is active. The hydrographs for most Inflow Forecast sites have incomplete information.

Summary
The 5 states of West India, namely Rajasthan (30), Gujarat (34), Madhya Pradesh (40), Maharashtra (67), Goa (2) thus have total of 173 sites on CWC’s FF website. These are comprised of 17 Level Forecasting, 130 Level Monitoring and 26 Inflow Forecasting sites. Out of 173 sites, 11 sites including 2 Level Forecasting, 6 Level Monitoring and 3 Inflow Forecasting sites are inactive. Rajasthan state has no Level Forecasting Site. Goa state has not a single Level Forecasting and Inflow Forecasting site. HFL details and date is not provided for most of the sites in West India. Also the hydrographs for most of Inflow Forecasting sites are incomplete.
