An analysis of the daily district wise rainfall data from India Meteorological Department (IMD) for June 2026, the first month of India’s South West Monsoon 2026 shows that there were only 197 instances (415 in June 2025, 384 in June 2024[i], 451 in June 2023[ii], 462 in June 2022[iii] and 442 in June 2021) when district rainfall of a day was above 50 mm. The rainfall of India in June 2026 was 99.5 mm, the rainfall of India in June 2025 was 180 mm, the rainfall of India in June 2024 was 147.2 mm[iv], the rainfall in June 2023 was 148.6 mm, the rainfall of India in June 2022 was 152.3 mm[v]. The figures and analysis are based on IMD’s daily district wise rainfall bulletins for the 24 hours ending at 0830 am each day. The numbers are the lowest in 2026 compared to those in last six years. The next high number, 384 in June 2024, is almost double the number in 2026.

High Rainfall days in India’s districts in SW Monsoon 2025
An analysis of the daily district wise rainfall data from India Meteorological Department (IMD) for India’s South West Monsoon 2025 (June-Sept rainfall was 937.2 mm, 8% above normal) shows that there were 2224 (2555 in 2024 SW Monsoon) instances when a district rainfall of a day was above 50 mm. Out of 738 districts of India, 510 districts or, about 69% of the districts experienced such high rainfall days during SW monsoon 2025.
Such high rainfall instances included 1920 instances when rainfall was 50-100 mm, 247 instances when it was 100-150 mm, 38 times it was 150-200 mm and 19 times above 200 mm.

An analysis of the daily district wise rainfall data from India Meteorological Department (IMD) for July 2025 shows that there were 718 (down from 914 in July 2024, 855 in July 2023, 809 in July 2022 and almost same as 717 in July 2021) instances when district rainfall of a day was above 50 mm. Such high rainfall instances included 635 (down from 730 in July 2024, 660 in July 2023, 663 in July 2022, up from 595 in July 2021) instances when rainfall was 50-100 mm, 75 (143 in July 2024, 149 in July 2023, 107 in July 2022, 98 in July 2021) instances when it was 100-150 mm, 7 (27 in July 2024, 34 in July 2023, 28 in July 2022, 17 in July 2021) times when it was 150-200 mm and just 1 (14 in July 2024, 12 in July 2023, 16 in July 2022 and 7 in July 2021) time when rainfall in July 2025 when rainfall was above 200 mm.

An analysis of the daily district wise rainfall data from India Meteorological Department (IMD) for India’s South West Monsoon 2023 shows that there were 2176 instances when a district rainfall of a day was above 50 mm. Such high rainfall instances included 1759 instances when rainfall was 50-100 mm, 329 instances when it was 100-150 mm, 64 times it was 150-200 mm and 24 times above 200 mm. Out of 717 districts of India, 531 districts or, about 74% of the districts experienced such high rainfall days during SW monsoon 2023.

Such high rainfall instances included 730 (up from 660 in July 2023, 663 in July 2022, 595 in July 2021) instances when rainfall was 50-100 mm, 143 (149 in July 2023, 107 in July 2022, 98 in July 2021) instances when it was 100-150 mm, 27 (34 in July 2023, 28 in July 2022, 17 in July 2021) times it was 150-200 mm and 14 (12 in July 2023, 16 in July 2022 and 7 in July 2021) times above when rainfall in July 2024 when rainfall was above 200 mm. As noted in earlier article[i], the July 2024 rainfall all over India was 9.3% above normal.

For July 2023, an analysis in this article of the daily district wise rainfall data from India Meteorological Department (IMD) shows that there were 855 (809 in July 2022 and 717 in July 2021) instances when district rainfall of a day was above 50 mm. Such high rainfall instances included 660 (663 in July 2022) instances when rainfall was 50-100 mm, 149 (107 in July 2022) instances when it was 100-150 mm, 34 (28 in July 2022) times it was 150-200 mm and 12 (13 in July 2022) times above 200 mm. As noted in detailed article[i], the July 2023 rainfall all over India was 13.5% above normal.

An analysis of the daily district wise rainfall data from India Meteorological Department (IMD) for the month of June 2023, the first month of India’s South West Monsoon 2022 shows that there were instances (462 in June 2022[i] and 442 in June 2021) when district rainfall of a day was above 50 mm. This is high considering that the rainfall of India in June 2023 was 148.6 mm[ii], the rainfall of India in June 2022 was 152.3 mm[iii], or daily average rainfall is about 5 mm. The high rainfall instances in June 2023 included 339 (339 and 371 in June 2022 and 2021) instances when rainfall was 50-100 mm, 68 instances (68 and 59 in June 2022 & 2021) when it was 100-150 mm, 26 (26 and 5 times in June 2022 & 2021) times it was 150-200 mm and 29 (29 & 7 times in June 2022 & 2021) times above 200 mm.
