Its deeply saddening that just before 4 pm today (Oct 11, 2018), Prof G D Agarwal, now known as Swami Gyan Swarup Sanand, laid down his life for the cause of a rejuvenated Ganga. He was on FAST UNTO DEATH, as he declared through his letter to the Prime Minister on Feb 24, 2018, four months before he was to launched his fast.

When Swami Sanand got no reply from the Prime Minister, he wrote another letter on June 13,2018, where he said that since he had received no response from the PM, Swami ji had no option but to start Fast Unto Death on June 22, 2018.

On June 23, 2018, Swami Sanand wrote another letter to the Prime Minister of India, attaching his earlier letters of Feb 24 and June 13, and saying that since no response has been received he has started his fast unto death from June 22, 2018 at Matri Sadan, Haridwar.

The government headed by the Prime Minister provided no satisfactory response or not even any serious response. He had declared a few days ago that he will also stop taking water from Oct 9, 2018, which he did. On Oct 10, 2018, police took him away to All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Rishikesh, to force feed him. He died between 3 and 4 pm on Oct 11, 2018.
Writing this with very very sad heart that we could not do much to save this true soldier of Ganga river. He had written in his very first letter that if any thing happens to him during his fast unto death, he will pray to the Mother Ganga that the Prime Minister should be held responsible.
May he soul rest in peace. River Ganga and people who fight for the river, worship the river, will never forget this sacrifice.
