August 2024: Mismanagement Damages Mahan-III HEP In Chhattisgarh

The powerhouse and dam of Mahan-III Hydroelectric Project (HEP) in Chhattisgarh have faced significant damages due to floods during intermittent rainfall in the catchment of Mahan river in the 1^st week of Aug 2024. As per the reports, the HEP dam overflowed and breached adjoining embankments because the project authority failed to open its gates in time.

The 24.75 Mw project is developed by Venika Hydro Power Project Ltd near Chikini village under Odgi (also spelt as Oudgi & Odagi) block of Surajpur district in Chhattisgarh. Work on the Run of the River (RoR) project started around 2011, and it was commissioned in Nov 2019. The dam is about 21 meter high and about 400 meter long including 70 meter and 20 meter long earthen embankments on right and left side of the main dam respectively.

Aug 2024: Massive Landslide damages NHPC’s Teesta V Hydropower station

A massive landslide (location: [27.2515, 88.4594]) at Dipu Data near Singtam in Gangtok district that brought down a huge part of a hill above the power house of the NHPC’s 510 MW Teesta V hydropower project on Teesta river in Sikkim at 7.30 in the morning of Aug 20 2024 has damaged the power house. The GIS building above the underground power house located at Balutar can be seen getting destroyed in the massive landslide and getting buried under the debris. The project has been out of operation since the Oct 4 2023 GLOF disaster in Teesta river [i] had over topped the dam and seriously damaged the project.

Himachal Pradesh: 12 More HEPs Impacted by Cloudburst Disaster in July 2024

The multiple cloudburst incidents between July 29 and August 01, 2024, has caused large scale devastation in Kullu and Shimla districts of Himachal Pradesh. The initial media reports in brief have mentioned that two hydro electric-power (HEP) projects namely 85 Mw Malana-I and 14 Mw GreeenKo Project being damaged by the flashfloods. The follow up reports have extensive coverage on rescue and relief works, but not much is revealed about scale of damages to the HEP projects.

July 2024: ‘Cloudburst’ in Beas Basin Damages 2 HEPs in Himachal Pradesh

The cloudburst induced flashflood destruction took place late on July 25, 2024 in Palchan area of Manali tehsil in Kullu district. Many of the media reports have also mentioned about the deluge damaging a hydroelectric power (HEP) project in Palchan just in a single line without revealing any details or even the name of the HEP.

While looking for more information about the affected HEP, we came to know that not just one but two HEPs have faced significant damages due to the flashflood incident. Both projects are owned and run by private companies in upper Beas River basin.

July 2024: A Worker killed at Dibang Multipurpose Project in Arunachal Pradesh

Months after work on Dibang Multipurpose Project (DMP) started, a worker has died in fatal accident at the project site which reportedly occurred at 03:00 am on July 16, 2024. The deceased is identified as Primal Udao a native of Cooch Bihar district of West Bengal. There is no confirmed information from the NHPC on the exact cause of his death.

The batching plant at the controversial under construction Vishnugad Pipalkoti Hydro Electric Power (HEP) project site in Uttarakhand has suffered significant damages due to a flash flood incident during the intervening night of July 15-16, 2024. The plant belongs to the Hindustan Construction Company (HCC) and has been set up by the Alaknanda river downstream the dam of 444 Mw HEP project adjacent to it dumping yard at Gulabkoti in Helang area of Joshimath tehsil in Chamoli district.

Himachal Pradesh: Damages at Luhri-I HEP Reveals Loopholes in Dam Safety Act

The controversial under construction Luhri Hydroelectric Project (HEP) Stage-I is being developed by Sutlej Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited (SJVNL) on Sutlej river near village Nirath village in Shimla and Kullu districts of Himachal Pradesh. The 210 MW HEP involves construction of an 80 m high concrete gravity dam with six bay gated spillways, a 567 m long horse shoe shaped diversion tunnel, two coffer dams, a surface power house, intake structure and penstocks among other parts.

The project would require 149.07 ha land including of 98.10 ha forest land and 50.97 ha private land. The project dam would create 6 km long reservoir area submerging 100.23 ha of land comprising of 63.52 ha of forest and 36.7 ha of private land. 39.47 ha of the submergence area is riverbed land.

May 2024: Another landslide at NHPC’s Lower Subansiri HEP leads to death, destruction

The controversial 2000 MW Lower Subansiri Hydropower Project of NHPC has suffered yet another landslide disaster in which one worker has died. The project has suffered damages, but the project authorities have not informed the people the reasons for this landslides, nor extent of damage and implications for project future. Project is already much delayed and after massive landslide in April and Oct 2023, its commissioning has been majorly rescheduled from earlier projected 2023-24 to now 2025-26 or subsequent date. The implications of these on the project cost and cost of electricity from the project are not known, not made public by NHPC.

May 2024: Lambadug HEP Leak Disaster in Kangra-Himachal

The massive leakages in penstock of Lambadug Hydro Electric Project (HEP) on May 10 2024 morning have caused extensive damages in Multhan market area of Kangra district in Himachal Pradesh. The sudden leakages turning into a flash flood spell occurred around 08:00 am on May 10, 2024. As per reports the deluge containing mud and debris spread over 400 meter of market and invaded about 50 homes, 80 shops apart from damaging cash crops over 6 acres farming land.

The incident created panic situation for 150 families living in the area. Several residents had to run to save their lives. The project and administration officials remained unavailable to control the situation for hours. With no help in site, the local people had to divert the gushing currents towards Lambadug river to prevent further damages to their homes and properties.

May 2024: Chanju III HEP in Chamba-HP: Rockfall Incident Kills 1; Injures 2

A rockfall incident at weir site of Chanju III Hydro Electric Project (HEP) site in Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh has left one worker dead and two injured [i]. The incident occurred in afternoon on May 3, 2024 when several workers were working on the weir site of the project.

Suddenly rock pieces started falling on them from uphill portion creating panic among the workers. They had to run for the shelter to save their lives. However, one worker was severely hit by the stones and two others got injured while looking for safety cover.
