An analysis of the daily district wise rainfall data from India Meteorological Department (IMD) for the month of September 2025 shows that there were 417 (546 in Sept 2024, 406 in Sept 2023[i], 417 in Sept 2022[ii] and 489 in Sept 2021[iii]) instances when district rainfall of a day was above 50 mm. Such high rainfall instances included 376 (438, 330, 365 and 374 in Sept 2024, Sept 2023, Sept 2022 and 2021 respectively) instances in Sept 2025 when rainfall was 50-100 mm, 34 (73, 64, 47 and 84 in Sept 2024, Sept 2023, Sept 2022 and 2021 respectively) instances in Sept 2025 when it was 100-150 mm, 4 (30, 10, 3 and 20 in Sept 2024, Sept 2023, Sept 2022 and 2021 respectively) times in Sept 2025 when it was 150-200 mm and 3 (5, 2, 2 and 11 in Sept 2024, Sept 2023, Sept 2022 and 2021 respectively) instances in Sept 2025 when rainfall in a day was above 200 mm.

Aug 2025: High Rainfall days in India’s districts
An analysis of the daily district wise rainfall data from India Meteorological Department (IMD) for the month of Aug 2025 shows that there were 664 (717 in Aug 2024; 500 in Aug 2023; 667 in Aug 2022[i] and 431 in Aug 2021) instances when rainfall of a day in a district was above 50 mm. Such high rainfall instances included 563 (572/ 424/ 553/ 371 in Aug 2024, Aug 2023, Aug 2022 and Aug 2021 respectively) instances when rainfall was 50-100 mm; 79 (113/ 67/ 98/ 48 in Aug 2024, Aug 2023, Aug 2022 and Aug 2021 respectively) instances when it was 100-150 mm; 13 (19/ 5/ 13/ 11 in Aug 2024, Aug 2023, Aug 2022 and Aug 2021 respectively) times it was 150-200 mm; and 9 (13/ 4/ 3/ 1 in Aug 2024, Aug 2023, Aug 2022 and Aug 2021 respectively) instance when a district day rainfall was above 200 mm.

An analysis of the daily district wise rainfall data from India Meteorological Department (IMD) for July 2024 shows that there were 914 (up from 855 in July 2023, 809 in July 2022 and 717 in July 2021) instances when district rainfall of a day was above 50 mm. Such high rainfall instances included 730 (up from 660 in July 2023, 663 in July 2022, 595 in July 2021) instances when rainfall was 50-100 mm, 143 (149 in July 2023, 107 in July 2022, 98 in July 2021) instances when it was 100-150 mm, 27 (34 in July 2023, 28 in July 2022, 17 in July 2021) times it was 150-200 mm and 14 (12 in July 2023, 16 in July 2022 and 7 in July 2021) times above when rainfall in July 2024 when rainfall was above 200 mm. As noted in earlier article[i], the July 2024 rainfall all over India was 9.3% above normal.

An analysis of the daily district wise rainfall data from India Meteorological Department (IMD) for the month of Aug 2023, shows that there were 500 (667 in Aug 2022[i] and 431 in Aug 2021) instances when district rainfall of a day in a district was above 50 mm. Such high rainfall instances included 424 (553 in Aug 2022 and 371 in Aug 2021) instances when rainfall was 50-100 mm, 67 (98 in Aug 2022 and 48 in Aug 2021) instances when it was 100-150 mm, 5 (13 in Aug 2022 and 11 in Aug 2021) times it was 150-200 mm and 4 (3 in Aug 2022 and 1 in Aug 2021) above 200 mm. Interestingly, in June 2023[ii] and July 2023[iii] there were 451 and 855 instances when rainfall was above 50 mm, while in June 2022[iv] and July 2022[v] there were 462 and 809 instances when rainfall in a district was above 50 mm. The July 2023[vi] and June 2023[vii] rainfall over India was 13.1% above normal and 10.1% below normal respectively, while the July 2022[viii] and June 2022[ix] rainfall all over India was 16.8% above normal and 8% below normal respectively.

An analysis of the daily district wise rainfall data from India Meteorological Department (IMD) for India’s South West Monsoon 2022 shows that there were 2079 instances when a district rainfall of a day was above 50 mm. Such high rainfall instances included 1712 instances when rainfall was 50-100 mm, 288 instances when it was 100-150 mm, 53 times it was 150-200 mm and 26 times above 200 mm. Out of 694 districts of India, 527 districts or, about 76% of the districts experienced such high rainfall days during SW monsoon 2021.

Such high rainfall instances included 365 (374 in Sept 2021) instances when rainfall was 50-100 mm, 47 (84 in Sept 2021) instances when it was 100-150 mm, 3 (20 in Sept 2021) times it was 150-200 mm and twice (eleven in Sept 2021) times above 200 mm.

An analysis of the daily district wise rainfall data from India Meteorological Department (IMD) for the month of June 2022, the first month of India’s South West Monsoon 2022 shows that there were 462 instances (442 in June 2021) when district rainfall of a day was above 50 mm. This is high considering that the rainfall of India in June 2022 was 152.3 mm[i], or daily average rainfall is about 5 mm. The high rainfall instances in June 2022 included 339 (371 in June 2021) instances when rainfall was 50-100 mm, 68 instances (59 in June 2021) when it was 100-150 mm, 26 (5 times in June 2021) times it was 150-200 mm and 29 (7 times in June 2021) times above 200 mm.

An analysis of the daily district wise rainfall data from India Meteorological Department (IMD) for the month of September 2021, the last month of India’s South West Monsoon 2021 shows that there were 489 instances when district rainfall of a day was above 50 mm. The normal monthly rainfall of India for Sept is 170.2 mm and actual rainfall was a huge 34.96% above normal at 229.7 mm[i], the actual average daily rainfall in this month was about 7.66 mm. Such high rainfall instances included 374 instances when rainfall was 50-100 mm, 84 instances when it was 100-150 mm, 20 times it was 150-200 mm and eleven times above 200 mm.

An analysis of the daily district wise rainfall data from India Meteorological Department (IMD) for the month of July 2021, the 2nd month of India’s South West Monsoon 2021 shows that there were 717 instances when district rainfall of a day was above 50 mm. [Considering that the normal monthly rainfall of India July is 285.3 mm, the average daily rainfall in this month is about 9.2 mm.] Such high rainfall instances included 595 instances when rainfall was 50-100 mm, 98 instances when it was 100-150 mm, 17 times it was 150-200 mm and 7 times above 200 mm. Interestingly, in June 2021[i] too there were seven instances when rainfall was above 200 mm, when the rainfall is supposed to be much below July rainfall. As noted in detailed article[ii], the July 2021 rainfall all over India was 6.7% below normal.
