June July 2023: District wise rainfall in  in India’s SW Monsoon

In the month of July 2023, the second month of India’s South West 2022 monsoon, India received 318.4 mm (327.7 mm in July 2022[i]) rainfall, 13.5 % above (16.8% above normal in July 2022) the normal July rainfall of 280.5 mm as per India Meteorological department. In July 2021, the rainfall was 266.1 mm[ii], about 6.7% below normal and  in July 2020, the rainfall was 257.1 mm[iii], or about 9.9% below normal.

June 2023: High Rainfall district days in India’s SW Monsoon

An analysis of the daily district wise rainfall data from India Meteorological Department (IMD) for the month of June 2023, the first month of India’s South West Monsoon 2022 shows that there were  instances (462 in June 2022[i] and 442 in June 2021) when district rainfall of a day was above 50 mm. This is high considering that the rainfall of India in June 2023 was 148.6 mm[ii], the rainfall of India in June 2022 was 152.3 mm[iii], or daily average rainfall is about 5 mm. The high rainfall instances in June 2023 included 339 (339 and 371 in June 2022 and 2021) instances when rainfall was 50-100 mm, 68 instances (68 and 59 in June 2022 & 2021) when it was 100-150 mm, 26 (26 and 5 times in June 2022 & 2021) times it was 150-200 mm and 29 (29 & 7 times in June 2022 & 2021) times above 200 mm.

June 2023: District wise rainfall in India’s SW Monsoon

In the just concluded month June 2023, the first month of India’s South West 2023 monsoon, India received 148.6 mm rainfall, 10% below the normal June rainfall of 165.3 mm as per India Meteorological department. In June 2022, the rainfall was 152.3 mm, 8% below normal, in June 2021, the rainfall was 182.9 mm[i], about 11% above normal and  in June 2020, the rainfall was 196.9 mm, or about 18% above normal and in June 2019 it was 33% below normal.

Pre Monsoon 2023: District Wise Rainfall in India

In the just concluded three month pre monsoon season (March 1 to May 31, 2023) India received 146.6 mm rainfall, 12% above the normal rainfall of 130.6 mm as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD). In 2020[i] , 2021[ii] and 2022[iii] India received 158.5 mm, 155.2 mm and 130.6 or 20% above normal, 18% above normal and 1% below rainfall respectively. So this year, India has received much higher pre monsoon season rainfall in 2023 compared to that in 2022, but lower than that in 2021 and 2020.

Winter 2023: District wise Rainfall in India

In the just concluded Winter Season 2023 (January 1 2023 to February 28 2023), as per India Meteorological Department (IMD), India received 45% below Normal Rainfall (it was 44% above normal rainfall in winter 2022[i] and 32% below normal rainfall in winter 2021[ii]). This is coming on top of 6.5% above normal in SW Monsoon 2022[iii] and 19% above normal rainfall in Post Monsoon season 2022[iv].

Post Monsoon 2022: District wise Rainfall in India

According to India Meteorological Department (IMD), during the just concluded Post Monsoon Rainfall for 2022, that included rainfall during Oct-Dec 2022 months, India received 144.1 mm rainfall, 19% above normal (177.7 mm rainfall, 43.54% above normal in Post Monsoon 2021[i]) rainfall of 121 mm. In the same period in 2020, India received 124.6 mm rainfall, 0.64% above the normal rainfall. As per IMD[ii] definition, the rainfall was in Normal category.

High Rainfall days in India’s districts in SW Monsoon 2022

An analysis of the daily district wise rainfall data from India Meteorological Department (IMD) for India’s South West Monsoon 2022 shows that there were 2079 instances when a district rainfall of a day was above 50 mm. Such high rainfall instances included 1712 instances when rainfall was 50-100 mm, 288 instances when it was 100-150 mm, 53 times it was 150-200 mm and 26 times above 200 mm. Out of 694 districts of India, 527 districts or, about 76% of the districts experienced such high rainfall days during SW monsoon 2021.

High Rainfall days in India’s districts in Sept 2022

An analysis of the daily district wise rainfall data from India Meteorological Department (IMD) for the month of September 2022, the last month of India’s South West Monsoon 2021 shows that there were 417 (489 in Sept 2021[i]) instances when district rainfall of a day was above 50 mm. Such high rainfall instances included 365 (374 in Sept 2021) instances when rainfall was 50-100 mm, 47 (84 in Sept 2021) instances when it was 100-150 mm, 3 (20 in Sept 2021) times it was 150-200 mm and twice (eleven in Sept 2021) times above 200 mm.

SW Monsoon 2022: District wise rainfall in India

In the just concluded South West Monsoon 2022, India received 925 mm rainfall, about 106.5% of the Normal SW Monsoon rainfall of 868.6 mm or 6.5% more than the normal SW Monsoon rainfall as per India Meteorological department. This rainfall will now be categorised as normal rainfall though the distribution has been far from normal, both temporally and spatially. The monsoon withdrawal[i], however is yet to happen from most of India, except a small part in North West India including parts of Rajasthan and Haryana. IMD has predicted that the withdrawal of monsoon will not be completed till at least Oct 15 as due to a fresh cyclonic activity in Bay of Bengal, rainfall over MP and UP is likely to continue in first week fo Oct 2022.

High Rainfall days in India’s districts in August 2022

An analysis of the daily district wise rainfall data from India Meteorological Department (IMD) for the month of Aug 2021, 3rd month of India’s South West Monsoon 2021 shows that there were 667 (much higher than 431 in Aug 2021) instances when district rainfall of a day in a district was above 50 mm. The normal monthly rainfall of India Aug is 258.2 mm and actual rainfall was 3.5% above normal at 263.8 mm[i]. Such high rainfall instances included 553 (371 in Aug 2021) instances when rainfall was 50-100 mm, 98 (48 in Aug 2021) instances when it was 100-150 mm, 13 (11) times it was 150-200 mm and 3 (1 in Aug 2021) above 200 mm. Interestingly, in June 2022[ii] and July 2022[iii] there were 462 and 809 instances when rainfall in a district was above 50 mm. The July 2022[iv] and June 2022[v] rainfall all over India was 16.8% above normal and 8% below normal respectively.
