June 2024: District wise rainfall in India’s SW Monsoon

In the just concluded month June 2024, the first month of India’s South West 2023 monsoon, India received 147.2 mm rainfall, 11% below the normal June rainfall of 165.3 mm as per India Meteorological department. In June 2023 rainfall was 148.6 mm (10% below normal)[i], in June 2022 the rainfall was 152.3 mm (8% below normal)[ii], in June 2021, the rainfall was 182.9 mm [iii] (about 11% above normal) and in June 2020, the rainfall was 196.9 mm (about 18% above normal) and in June 2019 it was 33% below normal. So in six years from 2019 to 2024, India had below normal rainfall in 4 years in June, and above normal in two years (2020 and 2021). Six times in last ten years and nine times since 2008 June rainfall was below normal.

However, the distribution of rainfall has been far from normal in June 2024, both temporally and spatially.

Pre Monsoon 2024 season: District wise rainfall in India

In the just concluded three month pre monsoon season (March 1 to May 31, 2024) India received 125.9 mm (146.6 mm in Pre Monsoon 2023 [i]) rainfall, 4% below (12% above in per monsoon 2023) the normal rainfall of 130.6 mm as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD). In 2020[ii] , 2021[iii] and 2022[iv] India received 158.5 mm, 155.2 mm and 130.6 or 20% above normal, 18% above normal and 1% below rainfall respectively. So this year, India has received the lowest pre monsoon season rainfall compared to that those in previous four years.

Winter 2024: District wise Rainfall in India

In the just concluded 2024 Winter Season (January 1 2024 to February 29 2024), as per India Meteorological Department (IMD), India received 33% below Normal Rainfall (it was 45% below normal in winter 2023 [i], 44% above normal rainfall in winter 2022 [ii] and 32% below normal rainfall in winter 2021 [iii]). This is coming on top of 5.55% below normal in SW Monsoon 2023 [iv] and 9% below normal rainfall in Post Monsoon season 2023 [v].

Post Monsoon 2023: District wise Rainfall in India

According to India Meteorological Department (IMD), during the just concluded Post Monsoon Rainfall for 2023, that included rainfall during the three Oct-Dec 2023 months, India received 110.7 mm rainfall, 9% below normal (144.1 mm, 19% above normal in Post Monsoon 2022 [i] and 177.7 mm rainfall, 43.54% above normal in Post Monsoon 2021 [ii]) rainfall of 121 mm. In the same period in 2020, India received 124.6 mm rainfall, 0.64% above the normal rainfall. As per IMD[iii] definition, the rainfall in Post Monsoon 2023 was in Normal Rainfall category.

High Rainfall days in India’s districts in SW Monsoon 2023

An analysis of the daily district wise rainfall data from India Meteorological Department (IMD) for India’s South West Monsoon 2023 shows that there were 2176 instances when a district rainfall of a day was above 50 mm. Such high rainfall instances included 1759 instances when rainfall was 50-100 mm, 329 instances when it was 100-150 mm, 64 times it was 150-200 mm and 24 times above 200 mm. Out of 717 districts of India, 531 districts or, about 74% of the districts experienced such high rainfall days during SW monsoon 2023.

High Rainfall days in India’s districts in Sept 2023

An analysis of the daily district wise rainfall data from India Meteorological Department (IMD) for the month of September 2023, the last month of India’s South West Monsoon 2023 shows that there were 406 (417 in Sept 2022 [i] and 489 in Sept 2021 [ii]) instances when district rainfall of a day was above 50 mm. Such high rainfall instances included 330 (365 and 374 in Sept 2022 and 2021 respectively) instances when rainfall was 50-100 mm, 64 (47 and 84 in Sept 2022 and 2021) instances when it was 100-150 mm, 10 (3 and 20 in Sept 2022 and 2021) times when it was 150-200 mm and twice (two and eleven in Sept 2022 and 2021 respectively) when rainfall in a day was above 200 mm.

SW Monsoon 2023: District wise rainfall in India

In the just concluded South West Monsoon 2023, India received 820 mm (925 mm in SW Monsoon 2022 [i]) rainfall, about 94.45 % (106.5% in 2022) of the Normal SW Monsoon rainfall of 868.6 mm or 5.55% (6.5% above normal in 2022) below normal SW Monsoon rainfall as per India Meteorological Department (IMD). This rainfall will now be categorised as below normal rainfall though the distribution has been unprecedented, both temporally and spatially.

High Rainfall days in India’s districts in August 2023

An analysis of the daily district wise rainfall data from India Meteorological Department (IMD) for the month of Aug 2023, shows that there were 500 (667 in Aug 2022[i] and 431 in Aug 2021) instances when district rainfall of a day in a district was above 50 mm. Such high rainfall instances included 424 (553 in Aug 2022 and 371 in Aug 2021) instances when rainfall was 50-100 mm, 67 (98 in Aug 2022 and 48 in Aug 2021) instances when it was 100-150 mm, 5 (13 in Aug 2022 and 11 in Aug 2021) times it was 150-200 mm and 4 (3 in Aug 2022 and 1 in Aug 2021) above 200 mm. Interestingly, in June 2023 [ii] and July 2023 [iii] there were 451 and 855 instances when rainfall was above 50 mm, while in June 2022 [iv] and July 2022 [v] there were 462 and 809 instances when rainfall in a district was above 50 mm. The July 2023 [vi] and June 2023 [vii] rainfall over India was 13.1% above normal and 10.1% below normal respectively, while the July 2022 [viii] and June 2022 [ix] rainfall all over India was 16.8% above normal and 8% below normal respectively.

June Aug 2023: District wise rainfall in in India’s SW Monsoon

In the just concluded month of Aug 2023, India received just 162.7 mm (263.8 mm in Aug 2022, 3.5% above the normal [i]) or 36.2% below normal rainfall against Aug normal rainfall of 254.9 mm as per India Meteorological department (IMD). In Aug 2021, the rainfall was 195.9 mm [ii], about 24.13% below normal and in Aug 2020, the rainfall was 327 mm [iii], or about 26.6% above normal.

High Rainfall days in India’s districts in July 2023

For July 2023, an analysis in this article of the daily district wise rainfall data from India Meteorological Department (IMD) shows that there were 855 (809 in July 2022 and 717 in July 2021) instances when district rainfall of a day was above 50 mm. Such high rainfall instances included 660 (663 in July 2022) instances when rainfall was 50-100 mm, 149 (107 in July 2022) instances when it was 100-150 mm, 34 (28 in July 2022) times it was 150-200 mm and 12 (13 in July 2022) times above 200 mm. As noted in detailed article[i], the July 2023 rainfall all over India was 13.5% above normal.
