In the just concluded month of Aug 2024, India received just 295.2 mm (162.7 mm or 36.2% below normal in Aug 2023[i], 263.8 mm in Aug 2022, 3.5% above the normal[ii]) or 15.8% above normal rainfall of 254.9 mm as per India Meteorological department (IMD). In Aug 2021, the rainfall was 195.9 mm[iii], about 24.13% below normal and in Aug 2020, the rainfall was 327 mm[iv], or about 26.6% above normal.

June 2024: District wise rainfall in India’s SW Monsoon
In the just concluded month June 2024, the first month of India’s South West 2023 monsoon, India received 147.2 mm rainfall, 11% below the normal June rainfall of 165.3 mm as per India Meteorological department. In June 2023 rainfall was 148.6 mm (10% below normal)[i], in June 2022 the rainfall was 152.3 mm (8% below normal)[ii], in June 2021, the rainfall was 182.9 mm[iii] (about 11% above normal) and in June 2020, the rainfall was 196.9 mm (about 18% above normal) and in June 2019 it was 33% below normal. So in six years from 2019 to 2024, India had below normal rainfall in 4 years in June, and above normal in two years (2020 and 2021). Six times in last ten years and nine times since 2008 June rainfall was below normal.
However, the distribution of rainfall has been far from normal in June 2024, both temporally and spatially.

In the just concluded three month pre monsoon season (March 1 to May 31, 2024) India received 125.9 mm (146.6 mm in Pre Monsoon 2023[i]) rainfall, 4% below (12% above in per monsoon 2023) the normal rainfall of 130.6 mm as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD). In 2020[ii] , 2021[iii] and 2022[iv] India received 158.5 mm, 155.2 mm and 130.6 or 20% above normal, 18% above normal and 1% below rainfall respectively. So this year, India has received the lowest pre monsoon season rainfall compared to that those in previous four years.

In the just concluded South West Monsoon 2023, India received 820 mm (925 mm in SW Monsoon 2022[i]) rainfall, about 94.45 % (106.5% in 2022) of the Normal SW Monsoon rainfall of 868.6 mm or 5.55% (6.5% above normal in 2022) below normal SW Monsoon rainfall as per India Meteorological Department (IMD). This rainfall will now be categorised as below normal rainfall though the distribution has been unprecedented, both temporally and spatially.

In the month of July 2023, the second month of India’s South West 2022 monsoon, India received 318.4 mm (327.7 mm in July 2022[i]) rainfall, 13.5 % above (16.8% above normal in July 2022) the normal July rainfall of 280.5 mm as per India Meteorological department. In July 2021, the rainfall was 266.1 mm[ii], about 6.7% below normal and in July 2020, the rainfall was 257.1 mm[iii], or about 9.9% below normal.

In June 2022, the rainfall was 152.3 mm, 8% below normal, in June 2021, the rainfall was 182.9 mm[i], about 11% above normal and in June 2020, the rainfall was 196.9 mm, or about 18% above normal and in June 2019 it was 33% below normal.

So this year, India has received much higher pre monsoon season rainfall in 2023 compared to that in 2022, but lower than that in 2021 and 2020.

In the just concluded Winter Season 2023 (January 1 2023 to February 28 2023), as per India Meteorological Department (IMD), India received 45% below Normal Rainfall (it was 44% above normal rainfall in winter 2022[i] and 32% below normal rainfall in winter 2021[ii]). This is coming on top of 6.5% above normal in SW Monsoon 2022[iii] and 19% above normal rainfall in Post Monsoon season 2022[iv].

In the just concluded month of August 2021, the rainfall in India was a massive 24.13% below normal. Actual rainfall was 195.9 mm, compared to normal rainfall of 258.2 mm, as per figures from India Meteorological Department (IMD). Contrast this with the rainfall in August last year, at 327 mm, was 26.6% above normal, ,and 44 year high. Even in July 2021, the rainfall was much higher at 266.1 mm, 6.73% below normal. In June 2021, the rainfall was 182.9 mm (10.96% above normal), not much below the August 2021 rainfall, when August is supposed to have much higher rainfall than June.
