SW Monsoon 2025: District wise rainfall in India

In the just concluded South West Monsoon 2025, India received 937.2 mm (934.8 mm in SW Monsoon 2024, 820 mm in SW Monsoon 2023, 925 mm in SW Monsoon 2022[i]) rainfall, about 107.9% (107.6% in 2024, 94.45 % in 2023, 106.5% in 2022) of the Normal SW Monsoon rainfall of 868.6 mm as per India Meteorological Department (IMD). This rainfall is categorised as normal rainfall.  The rainfall in SW monsoon 2025 is 5th highest since 2001 and 38th highest since 1901.

June July 2025: District wise rainfall in  in India’s SW Monsoon

In July 2025, India received 294.3 mm (306.6 mm in July 2024[i], 318.4 in July 2023[ii] and 327.7 mm in July 2022[iii]) rainfall, 4.9% above (9.3 % above in July 2024, 13.5% above normal in July 2023 and 16.8% above normal in July 2022) the normal July rainfall of 280.5 mm as per India Meteorological department. So this is the fourth consecutive year when rainfall in July is above normal, the quantum has gone down with each passing year during these last four years.

Winter 2025: District wise Rainfall in India

In the just concluded 2025 Winter Season (January 1 2025 to February 28 2025), as per India Meteorological Department (IMD), India received 47% below Normal Rainfall (it was 33% below normal in winter 2024[i], it was 45% below normal in winter 2023[ii], 44% above normal rainfall in winter 2022[iii] and 32% below normal rainfall in winter 2021[iv]). This is coming on top of 8% above normal in SW Monsoon 2024 and 3% below normal rainfall in Post Monsoon season 2024[v].

Post Monsoon 2024: District wise Rainfall in India

According to India Meteorological Department (IMD), during the Post Monsoon Rainfall for 2024, that included rainfall during the three Oct-Dec 2024 months, India received 117.4 mm rainfall, 3% below normal (110.7 mm, 9% below normal in Post Monsoon 2023[i], 144.1 mm, 19% above normal in Post Monsoon 2022[ii] and 177.7 mm rainfall, 43.54% above normal in Post Monsoon 2021[iii]) rainfall of 121 mm. In the same period in 2020, India received 124.6 mm rainfall, 0.64% above the normal rainfall. As per IMD[iv] definition, the rainfall in Post Monsoon 2024 was in Normal Rainfall category.

June 2024: District wise rainfall in India’s SW Monsoon

In the just concluded month June 2024, the first month of India’s South West 2023 monsoon, India received 147.2 mm rainfall, 11% below the normal June rainfall of 165.3 mm as per India Meteorological department. In June 2023 rainfall was 148.6 mm (10% below normal)[i], in June 2022 the rainfall was 152.3 mm (8% below normal)[ii], in June 2021, the rainfall was 182.9 mm[iii] (about 11% above normal) and  in June 2020, the rainfall was 196.9 mm (about 18% above normal) and in June 2019 it was 33% below normal. So in six years from 2019 to 2024, India had below normal rainfall in 4 years in June, and above normal in two years (2020 and 2021). Six times in last ten years and nine times since 2008 June rainfall was below normal.

However, the distribution of rainfall has been far from normal in June 2024, both temporally and spatially.

SW Monsoon 2023: District wise rainfall in India

In the just concluded South West Monsoon 2023, India received 820 mm (925 mm in SW Monsoon 2022[i]) rainfall, about 94.45 % (106.5% in 2022) of the Normal SW Monsoon rainfall of 868.6 mm or 5.55% (6.5% above normal in 2022) below normal SW Monsoon rainfall as per India Meteorological Department (IMD). This rainfall will now be categorised as below normal rainfall though the distribution has been unprecedented, both temporally and spatially.

June July 2023: District wise rainfall in  in India’s SW Monsoon

In the month of July 2023, the second month of India’s South West 2022 monsoon, India received 318.4 mm (327.7 mm in July 2022[i]) rainfall, 13.5 % above (16.8% above normal in July 2022) the normal July rainfall of 280.5 mm as per India Meteorological department. In July 2021, the rainfall was 266.1 mm[ii], about 6.7% below normal and  in July 2020, the rainfall was 257.1 mm[iii], or about 9.9% below normal.

Pre Monsoon 2023: District Wise Rainfall in India

In the just concluded three month pre monsoon season (March 1 to May 31, 2023) India received 146.6 mm rainfall, 12% above the normal rainfall of 130.6 mm as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD). In 2020[i] , 2021[ii] and 2022[iii] India received 158.5 mm, 155.2 mm and 130.6 or 20% above normal, 18% above normal and 1% below rainfall respectively. So this year, India has received much higher pre monsoon season rainfall in 2023 compared to that in 2022, but lower than that in 2021 and 2020.
