In the just concluded 2025 Winter Season (January 1 2025 to February 28 2025), as per India Meteorological Department (IMD), India received 47% below Normal Rainfall (it was 33% below normal in winter 2024[i], it was 45% below normal in winter 2023[ii], 44% above normal rainfall in winter 2022[iii] and 32% below normal rainfall in winter 2021[iv]). This is coming on top of 8% above normal in SW Monsoon 2024 and 3% below normal rainfall in Post Monsoon season 2024[v].

Post Monsoon 2024: District wise Rainfall in India
According to India Meteorological Department (IMD), during the Post Monsoon Rainfall for 2024, that included rainfall during the three Oct-Dec 2024 months, India received 117.4 mm rainfall, 3% below normal (110.7 mm, 9% below normal in Post Monsoon 2023[i], 144.1 mm, 19% above normal in Post Monsoon 2022[ii] and 177.7 mm rainfall, 43.54% above normal in Post Monsoon 2021[iii]) rainfall of 121 mm. In the same period in 2020, India received 124.6 mm rainfall, 0.64% above the normal rainfall. As per IMD[iv] definition, the rainfall in Post Monsoon 2024 was in Normal Rainfall category.

An analysis of the daily district wise rainfall data from India Meteorological Department (IMD) for India’s South West Monsoon 2023 shows that there were 2176 instances when a district rainfall of a day was above 50 mm. Such high rainfall instances included 1759 instances when rainfall was 50-100 mm, 329 instances when it was 100-150 mm, 64 times it was 150-200 mm and 24 times above 200 mm. Out of 717 districts of India, 531 districts or, about 74% of the districts experienced such high rainfall days during SW monsoon 2023.

An analysis of the daily district wise rainfall data from India Meteorological Department (IMD) for the month of September 2024, the last month of India’s South West Monsoon 2024 shows that there were 546 (406 in Sept 2023[i], 417 in Sept 2022[ii] and 489 in Sept 2021[iii]) instances when district rainfall of a day was above 50 mm. Such high rainfall instances included 438 (330, 365 and 374 in Sept 2023, Sept 2022 and 2021 respectively) instances in Sept 2024 when rainfall was 50-100 mm, 73 (64, 47 and 84 in Sept 2023, Sept 2022 and 2021 respectively) instances in Sept 2024 when it was 100-150 mm, 30 (10, 3 and 20 in Sept 2023, Sept 2022 and 2021 respectively) times in Sept 2024 when it was 150-200 mm and 5 (2, 2 and 11 in Sept 2023, Sept 2022 and 2021 respectively) instances in Sept 2024 when rainfall in a day was above 200 mm.

This rainfall is categorised as above normal rainfall.

Such high rainfall instances included 572 (424/ 553/ 371 in Aug 2023, Aug 2022 and Aug 2021 respectively) instances when rainfall was 50-100 mm; 113 (67/ 98/ 48 in Aug 2023, Aug 2022 and Aug 2021 respectively) instances when it was 100-150 mm; 19 (5/ 13/ 11 in Aug 2023, Aug 2022 and Aug 2021 respectively) times it was 150-200 mm; and 13 (4/ 3/ 1 in Aug 2023, Aug 2022 and Aug 2021 respectively) instance when a district day rainfall was above 200 mm.

In the just concluded month of Aug 2024, India received just 295.2 mm (162.7 mm or 36.2% below normal in Aug 2023[i], 263.8 mm in Aug 2022, 3.5% above the normal[ii]) or 15.8% above normal rainfall of 254.9 mm as per India Meteorological department (IMD). In Aug 2021, the rainfall was 195.9 mm[iii], about 24.13% below normal and in Aug 2020, the rainfall was 327 mm[iv], or about 26.6% above normal.

An analysis of the daily district wise rainfall data from India Meteorological Department (IMD) for July 2024 shows that there were 914 (up from 855 in July 2023, 809 in July 2022 and 717 in July 2021) instances when district rainfall of a day was above 50 mm. Such high rainfall instances included 730 (up from 660 in July 2023, 663 in July 2022, 595 in July 2021) instances when rainfall was 50-100 mm, 143 (149 in July 2023, 107 in July 2022, 98 in July 2021) instances when it was 100-150 mm, 27 (34 in July 2023, 28 in July 2022, 17 in July 2021) times it was 150-200 mm and 14 (12 in July 2023, 16 in July 2022 and 7 in July 2021) times above when rainfall in July 2024 when rainfall was above 200 mm. As noted in earlier article[i], the July 2024 rainfall all over India was 9.3% above normal.

In the month of July 2024, the second month of India’s South West 2024 monsoon, India received 306.6 mm (318.4 in July 2023[i] and 327.7 mm in July 2022[ii]) rainfall, 9.3 % above (13.5% above normal in July 2023 and 16.8% above normal in July 2022) the normal July rainfall of 280.5 mm as per India Meteorological department. So this is the third consecutive year when rainfall in July is above normal. In July 2021, the rainfall was 266.1 mm[iii], about 6.7% below normal and in July 2020, the rainfall was 257.1 mm[iv], or about 9.9% below normal.

An analysis of the daily district wise rainfall data from India Meteorological Department (IMD) for the month of June 2024, the first month of India’s South West Monsoon 2024 shows that there were 384 instances (451 in June 2023[i], 462 in June 2022[ii] and 442 in June 2021) when district rainfall of a day was above 50 mm. This, like the monthly rainfall for June, is the lowest figure for June for the last four years. The rainfall of India in June 2024 was 147.2 mm[iii], the rainfall in June 2023 was 148.6 mm, the rainfall of India in June 2022 was 152.3 mm[iv]. The data and analysis are based on IMD’s daily district wise rainfall bulletins for the 24 hours ending at 0830 am each day.
