June Aug 2025: District wise rainfall in India’s SW Monsoon

In Aug 2025, India received just 268.8 mm (295.5 mm or 15.8% above normal in Aug 2024[i], 162.7 mm or 36.2% below normal in Aug 2023[ii], 263.8 mm in Aug 2022, 3.5% above the normal[iii]) or 5.45% above normal rainfall of 254.9 mm as per India Meteorological department (IMD). In Aug 2021, the rainfall was 195.9 mm[iv], about 24.13% below normal and  in Aug 2020, the rainfall was 327 mm[v], or about 26.6% above normal.

June July 2024: District wise rainfall in India’s SW Monsoon

In the month of July 2024, the second month of India’s South West 2024 monsoon, India received 306.6 mm (318.4 in July 2023[i] and 327.7 mm in July 2022[ii]) rainfall, 9.3 % above (13.5% above normal in July 2023 and 16.8% above normal in July 2022) the normal July rainfall of 280.5 mm as per India Meteorological department. So this is the third consecutive year when rainfall in July is above normal.  In July 2021, the rainfall was 266.1 mm[iii], about 6.7% below normal and  in July 2020, the rainfall was 257.1 mm[iv], or about 9.9% below normal.

Winter 2024: District wise Rainfall in India

In the just concluded 2024 Winter Season (January 1 2024 to February 29 2024), as per India Meteorological Department (IMD), India received 33% below Normal Rainfall (it was 45% below normal in winter 2023[i], 44% above normal rainfall in winter 2022[ii] and 32% below normal rainfall in winter 2021[iii]). This is coming on top of 5.55% below normal in SW Monsoon 2023[iv] and 9% below normal rainfall in Post Monsoon season 2023[v].

SW Monsoon 2022: District wise rainfall in India

In the just concluded South West Monsoon 2022, India received 925 mm rainfall, about 106.5% of the Normal SW Monsoon rainfall of 868.6 mm or 6.5% more than the normal SW Monsoon rainfall as per India Meteorological department. This rainfall will now be categorised as normal rainfall though the distribution has been far from normal, both temporally and spatially. The monsoon withdrawal[i], however is yet to happen from most of India, except a small part in North West India including parts of Rajasthan and Haryana. IMD has predicted that the withdrawal of monsoon will not be completed till at least Oct 15 as due to a fresh cyclonic activity in Bay of Bengal, rainfall over MP and UP is likely to continue in first week fo Oct 2022.

SW Monsoon 2021: District wise rainfall in India

In the just concluded South West Monsoon 2021, India received 874.6 mm rainfall, about 99.32% of the Normal SW Monsoon rainfall or just 0.68% less than the normal SW Monsoon rainfall of 880.6 mm as per India Meteorological department. This rainfall will now be categorised as normal rainfall though till the beginning of Sept 2021, the rainfall at national level was 10% below normal. The massive 34.96% surplus rainfall in Sept 2021, thanks to a number of circulations contributed from the Bay of Bengal, ending with Cyclone Gulab and now possibly Cyclone Shaheen has contributed to wipe out the deficit.
