The number of high rainfall dist days have gone down across North India in SW Monsoon 2024 compared to those in 2023, as rainfall in 2024 was below that in 2023 across the region.

WEST INDIA: Rajasthan This traditionally low rainfall area of India with ten districts had no days with district rainfall over 50 mm on any day in SW Monsoon 2021 in any district when seasonal rainfall in this region was 20% above normal. The norm for high rainfall day needs to be reduced in case of regions like Ladakh and W Rajasthan, but question is what can be considered a high rainfall day for these regions?

As we can see from the above table, the Very High and Extremely High rainfall frequency in SW Monsoon 2024 was the highest both for Sept 2024 and overall monsoon 2024. For July, it was July 2023 and for Aug it was Aug 2020 that had the highest such numbers. For June 2024, Very High Rainfall numbers were highest for June 2023 and the Extremely High rainfall frequency was highest for June 2022.

In the table above the figures in the bracket with the year is the SW Monsoon rainfall of those respective years. Here we can see that even though the highest rainfall in these five years was in 2020 at 956.7 mm, the highest number of Very High and Extremely Rainfall and their total have all been the highest for 2024 when the SW Monsoon rainfall at 934.8 mm was lower than that in 2020. This is possibly an indication of increasing intensification of rainfall pattern with changing climate.

The figures of Very High and Extremely High Rainfall frequency in SW Monsoon are several times higher than those of 100-200 mm and 200+ mm rainfall in our district wise rainfall figures since the former figures are station wise whereas the latter are the average of all stations in any district.
