In the 2026 Winter Season (January 1 2026 to February 28 2026), as per India Meteorological Department (IMD), India received 60% below Normal Rainfall (it was 47% below normal in winter 2025[i], 33% below normal in winter 2024[ii], it was 45% below normal in winter 2023[iii], 44% above normal rainfall in winter 2022[iv] and 32% below normal rainfall in winter 2021[v]). In five of the last six years since 2021, winter rainfall has been 32% or more below normal.
The Normal rainfall in this two-month Winter season is supposed to be quite low at 39.8 mm, but the actual rainfall was 16 mm in winter 2026. In this report we are giving detailed state wise and district wise figures of the rainfall for the 2026 winter season as reported by IMD.
STATEWISE RAINFALL As we can see from the map below, out of 36 states and Union Territories (UTs) of India, 4 (Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Puducherry and Lakshadweep) had Large Excess, None had Excess, 3 (Rajasthan, Karnataka, Andaman-Nicobar Islands) had Normal, 8 had deficient, 18 had Large Deficient rainfall and 3 (Mizoram, Goa, Diu-Daman-Dadra-Nagarhaveli) had NO RAIN. Dadra & Nagar Haveli on western coast had NO RAIN in 2021-2025 too. Himachal Pradesh had the highest rainfall (104.9 mm), though it was 44 % below normal rainfall of 187 mm. Kerala had the highest surplus % at 116%.

SUB DIVISION WISE RAINFALL As can be seen from the IMD map below, out of 36 meteorological sub divisions of India, 3 (Kerala, TN-Puducherry-Karaikal and Lakshdweep) had large excess, 1 (South Interior Karnataka) had Excess, 5 (North Interior Karnataka, Coastal Karnataka, Andaman-Nicobar Islands, E Rajasthan, W Madhya Pradesh) had normal, 7 had deficient, 19 had Large Deficient and None had NO RAIN.
