June July 2025: District wise rainfall in  in India’s SW Monsoon

In July 2025, India received 294.3 mm (306.6 mm in July 2024[i], 318.4 in July 2023[ii] and 327.7 mm in July 2022[iii]) rainfall, 4.9% above (9.3 % above in July 2024, 13.5% above normal in July 2023 and 16.8% above normal in July 2022) the normal July rainfall of 280.5 mm as per India Meteorological department. So this is the fourth consecutive year when rainfall in July is above normal, the quantum has gone down with each passing year during these last four years.

In July 2021, the rainfall was 266.1 mm[iv], about 6.7% below normal and  in July 2020, the rainfall was 257.1 mm[v], or about 9.9% below normal.

Normal Rainfall, mmActual Rainfall, mm% departure from normal
June 2025165.3180+8.9
July 2025280.5294.3+4.9
June-July 2025445.8474.3+6.4

The total SW Monsoon 2025 rainfall till 08.30 hrs on July 31, 2025, or June July 2025 rainfall was 474.3 mm, 6.4% above normal June July rainfall of 445.8 mm,  as we can see from the table above. The IMD describes the July 2025 and also the June July 2025 rainfall as normal rainfall just based on this overall national rainfall figure, that nomenclature is clearly oblivious of the spatial or temporal distribution of rainfall during the relevant months. The rainfall distribution has been far from normal in July 2025 or June July 2025 as we will see below.

Bar Chart IMD divides the country into four regions: NW India, E and NE India, Central India, South Peninsula. The IMD Bar chart for daily national level rainfall during June July 2025 is given above.

State wise Rainfall As we can see from the IMD map above, out of 35 States and Union Territories (UTs), Two (Rajasthan and Ladakh) had large Excess (Actual rainfall more than 60% above normal), Six had Excess (Actual rainfall 20-59% above normal), Twenty One had normal (Actual rainfall 19% below normal to above normal), Six had deficit (Actual rainfall 20-59% below normal rainfall) and None had Large Deficit (Actual rainfall over 60% below normal) in rainfall in June July 2025. Goa had the highest rainfall of 1929.8 mm. Ladakh had the lowest rainfall of 31.8 mm. Ladakh had the highest surplus % at 167% and Meghalaya had the highest deficit % at -56%.

Sub Division wise rainfall IMD divides India into 36 meteorological divisions (the logic of many of them is far from clear). In June July 2025, as we can see from the map above, Three (East and West Rajasthan, East Madhya Pradesh) sub divisions had Large Excess rainfall, Eight had Excess rainfall, Eighteen had Normal rainfall and Seven had deficit rainfall. Coastal Karnataka had the highest rainfall at 2281.7 mm and Tamil Nadu, Puduchery and Karaikal had the lowest at 104.8 mm rainfall in June July 2025.

River Basin wise Rainfall As we can see from the above map, IMD also reports river basin wise rainfall, but as we have been noting in the past, this reporting remains rather callous and inadequate, unfortunately. This is clear from the above map, where we can see that IMD map provides no data of rainfall in June July 2025 in large number of river basins. Not listing the names of the river basins on the map is another serious lacunae of this IMD map.
